Week 11 Story: The Origin of Man's Best Friend

In the beginning, God made the earth and the sea. He inhabited the sea with numerous types of fish and the land with various types of animals, including humans.

As you know, Adam was the first human, then there was Eve. What eventually happened to them is a different story, but for now, they were still perfect.

One day, God told Adam that He wanted to rank the animals by power to assert man's dominance over the four-legged creatures. Adam agreed and asked God how he wanted to do so.

God commanded Adam, with the help of Eve, to give the largest bone to the most powerful animal and the smallest bone to the weakest animal, along with every animal in between.

Adam and Eve did as they were told and fetched bones of all different sizes. God then announced to all the animals that the bone ceremony would take place in the morning. It was a first come, first serve basis, so the first to show up would get the largest bow, and so on.

All the animals decided to get a good nights' sleep so they would be ready bright and early...except for Wolf. Wolf was so excited that he decided to stay up all night so he could ensure the first spot in line.

As everyone was sound asleep, Wolf just silently laughed at them, for he thought he was smarter than all of them. But as the night went on, Wolf got more and more tired watching everyone sleep. He tried his very best to keep his eyes open, but as soon as the sun began to rise, his eyes had finally shut.

Wolf was so tired that he slept through all of the commotion of waking up and meeting with Adam to receive their bone.

Lion was the first to receive a bone, making him the most powerful animal on earth. It was taking all day for Adam to pass out the bones, so by the time Wolf awoke and sprinted to Adam, Adam was handing the second to last bone to Frog.

Wolf was so disappointed that he was the weakest animal in all the earth. And to much surprise, Adam was, too. Adam knew that Wolf was better and stronger and wiser than Frog, so he asked God if there was anyway to help Wolf.

God also took pity on Wolf and gave him more wisdom, since he was the weakest now, so that he was the wisest animal on earth.

Wolf was so excited that he vowed his life to Adam in exchange for pleading with God. And that is how the dog became man's best friend.

Author's note: This story was not my original idea. It is based off of an old folktale from Old California. I simply made Coyote into Wolf and chose God as the deity instead of Kareya.

  1. A week 11 story? Amazing! You must be flying through this class!
Anyway, I liked this story a lot. I didn't understand where it was going until you put the picture of the dog at the end lol. I think it's funny that the wolf became the weakest animal, but now they are our best friends instead. It was a cute story. I wonder if there's a story about the cat? How did they become one of our other besties?

  2. Hi Libby,

This story was so cute! I like how it had somewhat historical context and developed towards the moral of the story. I also like that this story included elements of magical realism and was fictional but also incorporated elements of real life. Anything with dogs makes me so happy so I loved this. Keep up the good work!
